River Forest is a community of nearly 500 homes located in Laplace, LA just off of West Airline Highway in St. John the Baptist Parish. River Forest of Laplace is one of the oldest and largest subdivisions in the Laplace area. Bordered by Lake Pontchartrain to the north and the Mississippi River to the south, River Forest continues to be one of Laplace's safest and nicest neighborhoods.
Neighbors, the River Forest Park's playground equipment has been ravaged by termites and is not safe for anyone to play on. Additionally, there is a fell tree that was knocked down by winds from Tropical Storm Lee. For these reasons, the park has been temporarily closed. We have received bids to have the tree and damaged swing set removed from the park. Once the funding has been allocated and the work performed, the park will be re-opened but as it stands now, the park is closed.
The recent flooding caused by Tropical Storm Lee brought some much needed new attention to an old problem for residents of Phase IV in River Forest. WWL TV interviewed some of our neighbors who have been impacted by flooding caused by wind-pushed lake water inundating the marsh behind our subdivision. The reason for this flooding is due to the lack of a levee system to protect against this. For years now, the parish has been promising to the find funding for a levee and pump system to prevent this from happening again. We pay taxes just like everyone else in the parish and we deserve to have this addressed once and for all. In the coming weeks, the RFHA plans on talking directly to the parish government to get some action on this. They have waited long enough and now it is time to do something.
